Love your kidneys!

On the 29th and 30th of March, Fresenius Medical Care Malaysia participated in a kidney disease awareness drive in support of World Kidney Day 2013. According to the Malaysia Clinical Practice Guideline on Hypertension, every second person over the age of 30 is suffering from high blood pressure in Malaysia. High blood pressure is one of the main reasons for kidney disease.

The mission of World Kidney Day (WKD) is to raise awareness of the importance of our kidneys to our overall health and to reduce the frequency and impact of kidney disease and its associated health problems worldwide.

According to the Malaysia Clinical Practice Guideline on Hypertension, the prevalence of hypertension in Malaysians aged 30 years and above is 42.6% (2008 data)1. High blood pressure is one of the major risk factors that contribute to chronic kidney disease. Therefore, one of the key prevention activities on this day was to provide free blood pressure measurements for the public during this event.

The awareness drive was held in two locations: The first day held at Jaya One, sponsored by their management as part of their annual Corporate Social Responsibility programme and the second was held at the popular Titiwangsa Lake Park.

Volunteer staff members from Fresenius Medical Care Malaysia participated in the awareness drive to support WKD by educating the public on maintaining healthy kidneys through materials such as postcards, quizzes, presentations and by offering free blood pressure tests.

The staff recorded more than 100 blood pressure measurements and found that 19% of the results did not lie within a normal range indicating that early detection is crucial.

Fun and hydrating giveaways such as “I love my kidneys” badges and bottled drinking water were given out as a reminder to maintain good overall kidney health.

The volunteers from Fresenius Medical Care Malaysia dedicated themselves to helping drive this great global campaign and were happy to commit part of their weekend especially as it was a rewarding day with great involvement and feedback from the public.
