Dialysis recipes: A patient–nurse initiative creating a new tasty cuisine for dialysis patients

“Secrets, especially with cooking, are best shared so that the cuisine lives on” – Chef Bo Songvisava. The “So You Think You Can Cook? WOK IT!” cooking competition created a brand new dialysis recipe book for your patients to download now.

The “So You Think You Can Cook? WOK IT!” cooking competition is a Corporate Social Responsibility program initiated by Fresenius Medical Care Malaysia involving patients and nurses from various dialysis centers nationwide. Judged by two of Malaysia’s well-known food industry experts, Chef Khai and Chef Ryan Khang, the outcome is a brand new recipe book for dialysis patients.

The competition, which started in October 2012, ran for two months and involved dialysis-related recipes being collected from participants. Those with the most creative ideas were invited to demonstrate their culinary skills for the chefs in Kuala Lumpur. The key goals of the event were to encourage a healthy, but still tasty, diet amongst dialysis patients, encourage patients to cultivate a new hobby, and create a fun team activity for patients and their nurses.

The winners – Zhi En Dialysis Center, Johor; MAA Medicare Dialysis Center Jalan Ipoh; MAA Medicare Dialysis Center Butterworth; and The Rotary HD Center Johor Bahru – received some shopping vouchers for their fantastic efforts.

The New Straits Times Malaysia thought the event was interesting and original enough to publish an article about it online and in their print newspaper. The evening was a real success for everybody enjoying the wonderful food that was cooked. All recipes have been verified by dietician Professor Winnie Chee from the International Medical University, Malaysia.
